For more than two decades, Joanna Jenson built a career around education, leadership and the transformative power of learning. Now, she is turning her attention to another kind of transformation — the stories we tell about our lives, the choices that shape us and the possibility of beginning again.

Joanna is an experienced executive, board member and educator whose career has spanned universities, vocational education, government, corporate organisations and the medical profession. She holds a Doctor of Education and spent 15 years as a university lecturer in Australia, alongside senior leadership and advisory roles focused on education, strategy, curriculum design and organisational change.

Throughout her career, Joanna has been drawn to the intersection of people and possibility. She has led teams, established education centres, developed innovative learning programs and has overseen complex projects designed to turn organisational vision into meaningful outcomes. Her work has taken her into the world of medical education, where she has contributed to the development of programs, curricula and professional pathways for doctors and other health professionals.

She has also led significant organisational change, working with boards, executives and diverse stakeholder groups to bring strategy to life. Whether developing a new education program, guiding a team through change or standing before an audience, Joanna has always understood that behind every strategy, every program and every organisation are people — with their own ambitions, challenges, histories and stories. Perhaps it is this understanding of people that has ultimately led Joanna to fiction?

Becoming an Author

Writing has opened a new chapter in a life already rich with professional experiences, friendships, travel, change and observation. Her first novel explores the complexities of relationships, the lingering echoes of the past, the resilience required to move forward and the unexpected possibilities that can emerge when life takes an unforeseen turn.

Her characters are imperfect, hopeful and occasionally uncertain — much like the rest of us. They find themselves at crossroads, facing choices about the lives they thought they wanted and the lives they might still create.

For Joanna, becoming an author is not a departure from everything that came before. It is another way of understanding people and the experiences that connect us.

After years spent helping others learn, develop and find their way forward, Joanna is beginning a new chapter of her own — this time, with a story to tell.

Why I Write

After more than two decades working with people, leading teams and helping others learn and grow, Joanna became an observer of the wonderfully complicated world of human behaviour. Conversations, relationships, unexpected encounters and the experiences people shared gave her an endless source of inspiration.

She became particularly interested in the moments that change us — the choices we make, the paths we take, the relationships we hold onto and the courage it sometimes takes to start again.

Writing gives her the freedom to explore those moments.

Joanna creates characters who are imperfect, relatable and occasionally surprising, then placing them in situations that challenge what they thought they knew about themselves and their lives. Her characters are fictional but the emotions they experience are very real.

She also writes because she loves the escape that a good story provides. Joanna wants her readers to step into another world, become invested in the characters and perhaps see a little of themselves along the way.

And then there is travel. She has always loved discovering new places, and wanted to bring that sense of adventure to her writing — allowing destinations to become part of the story rather than simply a backdrop.

Ultimately, Joanna writes about life: its complications, its surprises, its relationships and its second chances.

Because sometimes the ending we thought we were facing is actually the beginning of something entirely new.
